EBONY Magazine
Founded in 1945, Ebony is the first black-oriented magazine in the US to garner national circulation. Originally highlighting African-American sports figures and entertainers, but since have included Black achievements of all sorts. Notably a pictorial news publication, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his column “Advice for Living” through late 1950. By the 1960’s, articles appeared supporting civil rights, a perfect marriage for the magazines continuous emphasis on the words respect, dignity, pride, recognition, understanding, hope, and inspiration. As of recent the publication was purchased by Ulysses “Junior” Bridgeman, former NBA Louisville star, after Ebony went bankrupt early this year.
“Ulysses “Junior” Bridgeman, a former Milwaukee Bucks basketball player and University of Louisville Cardinal, bought the company, saying he believes he can bring the magazine back to profitability with “the right ideas and the right execution," the Chicago Tribune reported.”
“In 2016, Johnson Publishing sold Ebony and Jet magazines to the Clear View Group, before going bankrupt in 2019.” - Courier Journal
